Liquid Nitrogen Mole Removal
All About Mole Removal Surgery – Removing Moles Using Surgery
Moles, or nevi, can appear at birth or later in life. Exposure to the sun has been linked to moles or they can be hereditary.
Moles can be removed in one of several ways: excision, i.e. cutting, freezing with liquid nitrogen or excision with cauterization, which sees moles burned away. Laser removal is available, but is not favored for most deep moles owing to the shallow penetration of laser.
After treatment, stitches may or may not follow, depending on the mole’s depth and the nature of cosmetic outcome sought.
Negative consequences of mole removal include infection, anesthetic allergy and nerve damage. Risks vary with the area that is treated and the method used for removal. One of the most common problems resulting from mole removal is scarring. A surgeon can provide an idea of the location and nature of scarring that will ensue.
Before a mole is removed, the area to be treated is cleaned with Betadine, alcohol or another material. The area is numbed with an anesthetic. While most patients speak of Novocain as an anesthetic (the generic name is procaine) this drug is no longer used in skin surgery; lidocaine is one of the most popular anesthetics. Lidocaine goes by the brands of Bactine, Lidocaine Viscous, Medi-Quik Spray, Xylocaine Topical, Xylocaine Viscous, Xylocaine Jelly, Zilactin-L, Anestacon and Lidoderm. Anesthetization takes little time.
Other medications can be employed if a patient is allergic to lidocaine. The majority of surgeons add epinephrine to the lidocaine to assist in the halting of bleeding.
Depending on how large is the mole and the removal method used, a drape may be applied to the treated area.
No stitches need be given if the surgeon uses a scalpel to shave the mole flush or somewhat below the level of the skin. At this point an electrical tool will burn the area then a solution is applied to stop bleeding. Next a topical antibiotic is put upon the wound, which is covered with a bandage.
Moles chosen for excision with stitches are usually flat or darker, or both. In this eventuality, the area is cleaned, then a scalpel is used. Cutting is around a border whose size depends on the probability of pre-cancer or cancer. Depending on depth, stitches are either deep or on the skin’s upper surface. The former are absorbed by the body and need not be removed.
After the operation, a layer of antibiotic salve and a bandage are kept on the wound. Antibiotics containing neomycin (e.g. Neosporin and Medi-Quik) should be avoided, as many people are allergic to them and can develop a rash. Polysporin does not include neomycin. The wound should be cleaned once or twice a day with either diluted hydrogen peroxide or water.
A few legends persist regarding healing. Some people believe wounds will heal faster if exposed to air, but a number of studies have disproved this: healing is significantly quicker if bandages and antibiotic salve are used. Vitamin E has been shown to hinder healing and worsen scars.
